For human beings, a SubSurfaceSaṁsedaja is an extraordinary being with the ability to penetrate multiple surfaces. They penetrates the topsoil, the surface of the water, their own skin, as well as the boundaries of life and death. They pass between the many surfaces of matter and concepts, sometimes emerging, but more often hiding. They are passages that meet with different surfaces and create a liminal space at the intersection. They become one with their surroundings, extending in all directions, like painting, dance and poetry.

SubSurfaceSaṁsedaja is a series of mixed-media works inspired by Hangzhou's humid natural environment that Zhang Wenxin created after moving to the city. She goes into the mountains to shoot during heavy rain, enters the virtual world to model during nightfall, and reads about the past and the future in clear weather. SubSurfaceSaṁsedaja is both an image-based field report with a de-anthropocentric perspective and a temporary altar that connects ancient mythology with the digital world through images.

对于人类来说,湿生生命乃是具有多种表面穿透能力的特异存在——

他/她们穿透表土、穿透水面、穿透自己的皮囊,也穿透着生死及众多二元的边界。他/她们在物质与概念的众多表面之间穿行,时而浮现,却在更多的时候隐藏。它们是通道,与不同的表面相遇后,交汇处产生一扇扇门。他/她们与周遭环境融为一体,四面八方皆可延伸,就像绘画、舞蹈和诗歌。

《次表面湿生》是张文心移居杭州后,以杭州潮湿的自然环境为启发进行的一系列创作,展出作品综合了录像、摄影、装置等媒介。她在大雨时进山拍摄,在入夜时进入虚拟世界建模,在晴朗的天气里阅读过去、构想未来。《次表面湿生》既是一份去人类中心视角的图像式田野报告,也是一座以图像连接远古神话与数字世界的临时祭坛。

As a person who travels between real and virtual worlds, I would often enter a liminal/subsurface perceptual space where everyday experience dissolves into magic particles/pixels at the intersection of images. Here, algorithmic rays repeatedly render images between multiple planes to mimic organic matter; it is where minerals mined from mountains flow through the translucent bodies of hydrophilic organisms; it is also where clouds descend as rainwater ripples and decompose the dead bodies of plants. SubSurfaceSamsvedaja: Twin Chrysalis, uses video as a medium to simulate a perceptual pathway that intersects across scales and multiple perspectives. In this topological field between the organic and the inorganic, the real and the unreal, two autopoetic chrysalises, manifest their moist shapes in a network of generative confrontations.

我是一个在现实与虚拟世界之间游走创作的人,在一次次旅程的往返中,我常常进入一个阈限/次表面式的知觉空间。在这里,日常经验在图像交叠处溶解为被称为像素的魔法颗粒;算法光线在多个平面之间反复绘图模仿有机物;来自山林的矿物质在喜湿生物半透明的体内流动;云气降落为雨水激起涟漪也分解着植物的死体。《次表面湿生域:双蛹》以影像为媒介模拟了一条跨尺度、多视角交融的知觉路径,在这个介于有机和无机、实在和虚幻之间的拓扑领域,两枚由生成对抗网络孕育的蝶蛹依湿受形、自主创生。
